History of the Festival
The Hawke's Bay Readers and Writers Festival is the new regional evolution of The Hastings Festival of Writers.
The festival has grown from a series of events at Te Mata Estate in the barrel rooms of the winery in Havelock North into the biennial festival it is now, with a brilliant reputation for fine wine, fine food, and fine writers.
The festival is run by a charitable trust called Writers in Wineries, a team of enthusiastic volunteers with a passion for literature.
The connection with wine is not accidental. We live in Hawke's Bay wine country and see the connection between fine words, fine wine and fine food as being important to our region. We prefer the companionship of a table of friends and aim to incorporate this into the festival events.
We provide a mixture of 'koha' and ticketed events to provide access for as many readers as possible.
